American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) President and CEO Kevin M. Burke released the following statement regarding the release of Burma democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi from her house arrest sentence.

“Since 2003, the American Apparel & Footwear Association has urged the U.S. Congress to impose and maintain an import ban on all goods from Burma entering the United States so long as the ruling military junta continues to brutally enslave the people of Burma.

“Release of Aung San Suu Kyi is a small but positive step on a very long road towards restoring democracy in Burma.

“AAFA will continue to advise the United States government to maintain the ban with the hope that positive news will lead to an irreversible process of real reform in Burma, which includes Suu Kyi's active participation in Burma's political dialogue.”
