RMG trade body pleads Japan to grant duty-free access

Bangladesh's apex trade body FBCCI, recently called upon Japan to grant Bangladeshi goods, particularly readymade garments a duty-free access in Japan.

President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), AK Azad, laid emphasis on this demand while he spoke at a meeting on "Investment Possibility in Bangladesh", conducted by the Japan-Bangladesh Development Authority (JBDA). HT Imam, Adviser to the Prime Minister presided over the meeting.

Azad urged the investors from Japan who attended the meeting, to set up a special economic zone in Bangladesh, as was done in case of Thailand, China and Indonesia.

There are immense prospects for establishing industries in textile, telecom and jute sector in Bangladesh, which makes it easy for Japan to invest here, Azad said. He added that, FBCCI would work in this direction so as to ensure various investment facilities to Japanese investors, like land allocation.

He advised the Japanese delegation which was on a visit to Bangladesh, to set up special economic zone in the port city of Chittagong or in the northern part of the country.

He further said that, Japan can import a lot of items from Bangladesh, as the country manufactures superior quality products at lower rates.

Imam too pleaded that more Japanese investment should flow in the country owing to its investment-receptive milieu. He advised the Japanese entrepreneurs to invest a larger amount in the energy sector of the country so as to boost its growth potential.
