Dr. Karen Kyllo, Deputy Vice President, Global Softlines, for SGS North America Inc's Consumer Testing Services, served as a panelist at a performance textile seminar being sponsored by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) as part of this week's Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Salt Lake City.

The seminar, titled "Creature Comforts of Performance Textiles," dealt with the various factors that contribute to the comfort of performance clothing and how performance brands measure and explain those features. Topics discussed included the thermophysiological (heating/cooling and moisture management), sensory (fabric weight and hand), ergonomic (stretch and movement) and psychological aspects of delivering comfortable performance wear.

Kyllo was joined by panelists Chris Harding, Managing Director of EquipUK, parent company of RAB outdoor apparel and mountaineering gear, and David Parkes, President and Founder of Concept III Textiles International, an inclusive resource for the development, sourcing and production of fabric-based finished products. The session was moderated by Karla Magruder, founder of textile consulting firm Fabrikology International.

At SGS Kyllo spearheads the softlines testing business, directing the full service portfolio from performance and safety testing to final inspection, care labeling, and regulatory advisory services. Her expertise in the textile and apparel regulatory and testing industry spans more than two decades of global technical client services, operations management, and participation in industry standards development.

Kyllo's industry contributions include chairing the D13.52 Flammability committee for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and active involvement in both U.S. and international test method development through the AATCC, ASTM and ISO.
