AAFA urges YES vote on ATPA/TAA renewal

2 min read

On behalf of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA), the national trade association of the apparel and footwear industries and their suppliers, Kevin M. Burke President and CEO of AAFA, expresses strong support for legislation to extend Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and the Andean Trade Preference Act (ATPA).

AAFA has key voted House approval of this legislation as a YES vote.

When enacted, this legislation will extend two important trade related programs – the Andean Trade Preferences Act (ATPA) and the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA).

The ATPA supports a strong economic partnership between the United States and the Andean region. This partnership is critical to the success of our anti drug policies with the region and to the survival of democratic economies and institutions in South America. Moreover, the ATPA program anchors an important export market and sourcing partner for the U.S. textile and apparel industry.

The TAA program plays a critical role in support of education and job placement for U.S. workers who, through no fault of their own, are displaced because of global competition. House approval is needed now to ensure these provisions do not expire at the end of this week.

I urge you to vote YES on legislation to extend Trade Adjustment Assistance and the Andean Trade Preference Act.

Thank you for your time and consideration in this important matter.
