Amirul Haque, Chairman of the National Garments Workers Federation, while speaking at a press conference recently alleged that, even after three months of the implementation of the new wage structure which became effective since November 1, last year, 30 percent of the garment units in the country are still not paying wages to their workers in accordance with the same.

He insisted on thorough implementation of the new wage structure in all the garment factories, on immediate basis and demanded that the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should intervene in the matter.

He further stated that, the Prime Minister would be handed over a list of the names of the garment factories which are not abiding by the new wage structure and not paying their workers accordingly.

The government, on October 31, 2010 revised the minimum wage of the garment workers in the seventh grade and raised it to Tk 3,000, while the same for the grade one workers was raised to Tk 9,300.

Amirul revealed that, no maternity leaves were being given to the female employees in most of the firms and the workers who tried to form trade unions had to face terminations.

He said that, the 4,800 garment firms of the country employ around 3.5 million workers, of which 85 percent workers are female.
