Coastal to use DTG technology to print Academy Awards T-shirts

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (A.M.P.A.S.) has selected Coastal Printworks, a family-owned screen printing shop in southern California, to supply the official 83rd Academy Awards T-shirts.
The Academy's T-shirt design this year will feature an image of the Oscars statue, with the search lights of a Hollywood premiere shining behind it. Because of all the various gold and yellow hues in this design, it would be a very complicated image to duplicate with traditional screen-printing techniques. In its search for a supplier, A.M.P.A.S. sought a T-shirt printing company that would be able to reproduce this bright and complex design without losing the integrity of the image. Pricing was a factor, but quality was paramount.
“Thankfully, we made the decision five years ago to invest in state-of-the-art Direct to Garment digital printing technology,” says Jim Dorsey, Coastal Printworks director of Sales and Marketing. “We will always provide traditional screen-printing services, but the fact that we have been offering this incredible digital printing option for so many years not only helped us land this project with A.M.P.A.S., but continues to secure our position as an industry leader in DTG printing.”
Whereas traditional screen-printing includes a manual color separation process, digital printing does not. In Direct to Garment digital printing, a high-resolution file of the original design is loaded into the Direct to Garment machine's hard drive and printed, via ink jet sprays, directly into the fabric, with no artistic license taken. In addition to its digital equipment, Coastal Printworks has developed proprietary pre-production and finishing techniques to achieve even higher resolution and greater saturation, resulting in a "museum quality" finished product.
As a result of its early investment in this emerging digital printing technology, Coastal Printworks has been winning contracts across a wide range of industries, from fashion and retail to arts and entertainment.
