In January 2011, China's silk garment exports increased substantially in quantity but registered drop in prices. According to China Customs' report, due to a rise in export of low priced females' knitted underpants, the quantity was higher but the average unit price declined.

In January, China's silk garment industry exported 17.57 million pieces, registering very impressive rise of 124.91 percent compared to last year but registered 40.81 percent decline in average unit price. The average unit price per piece is US $8.19 this year. Total exports were worth US $144 million, an increase of 33.14 percent.

Silk garment exports had a lion share of 69.05 percent in China's silk manufactured goods and 37.68 percent share in total exports of real silk merchandise. In China's total garment exports, it accounted for just 1.08 percent.

In January, China exported 8.75 million pieces of females' knitted underpants, nearly half of the total exports of silk garments and more than 10 times compared to last year. In January, average unit price for these underpants was just US $0.5 / piece, which dragged down total value of exports.
