Retail sales of clothing, footwear and accessories in the Canterbury region for the previous year are estimated at more than $570 million. And, the prospect for fashion in the course of the city's reconstruction remains an important issue.

“Like most Cantabrians, we're concerned about possible inflation in rents and implore both the Government and landlords to support the recovery of retail in Christchurch as best they can,” says Opai.

“We would like to see companies working together to create a new fashion precinct; an environment that recognises the needs of small and large retailers alike, and presents opportunities for other creative businesses.”

Several clothing retailers also advocate the restoration of historic buildings, because they promote the history and character of Christchurch.
