Retail sales of organic textiles in the UK have defied the economic downturn growing by an estimated 7.8% in 2010, with turnover of organic businesses certified by the Soil Association increasing a whopping 35% to £12 million, according to the Soil Association's latest Organic Market Report - the definitive guide to organic trade in the UK.

The Soil Association is the UK's leading certifier of organic textiles and one of the world's foremost certifiers to Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). Worldwide, GOTS licensees are up from 27 just five years ago, to 2,750 across five continents.

Organic cotton accounts for around 91% of UK organic textile sales. The remainder consists of wool, linen and other fibres.

Soil Association certified organic textiles are planet friendly, free from harmful chemicals and promote better working conditions and high animal welfare.

Textiles with our symbol on comply with the Global Organic Textile Standards– the international gold standard for organic textiles. The whole supply chain from field to final product is certified, and environmental and social standards apply throughout the process.

The Soil Association was founded in 1946 by a group of farmers, scientists and nutritionists who observed a direct connection between farming practice and plant, animal, human and environmental health.
