Afghan clothing gains duty-free access to India

India has waived duty on imports from Afghanistan as a part of its Duty-Free Tariff Preference (DFTP) scheme, an economic package for least developed countries (LDCs).
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, most of the products from Afghanistan would gain duty-free access in India.
The DFTP scheme was launched in 2008 by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India. It aims to provide preferential duty access to products that constitute around 92.5 percent of the world's overall LDC exports.
Under the scheme, a zero-duty access on 85 percent of India's total tariff lines has been granted on Afghanistan's exports to India. The scheme would be implemented over a period of five years, and the duty would be brought to zero in five equal phases of 20 percent reduction in the existing duty rates.
Cotton and readymade garments are some of the items of interest for the LDCs which are covered under the scheme. Tanzania, Uganda, Cambodia, Madagascar and Rwanda are among the countries which have been notified under the scheme.
