The World Trade Organization (WTO) had also discussed the issue of country-of-origin label to reach a consensus on a common law for its 153 members. However, countries are so divided that the WTO has never even come closer to striking a deal.
Editor's note-Until a few decades ago, country labeling made sense as the goods were made in a single country right from sourcing of raw materials to the making of the final product. But today, times have changed and a multinational company based in country A can source a raw material from country B, have its first stage of manufacturing in country C, the finishing stage, including labeling and packing, in country D, and sell the final product in country E. Hence, it would be difficult for the modern-day multinational companies to properly implement the law, if it comes into force.
