Dollar General broke ground on its 10th distribution center in Bessemer, Ala. The $100 million facility, located on more than 100 acres at 4101 Lakeshore Parkway, should eventually employ 650 people and will be the largest such facility in Jefferson County.

"On June 9, Dollar General marks the beginning of a new distribution center and celebrates our commitment to the Bessemer community," said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General's chairman and CEO, at the ground-breaking ceremony hosted by Birmingham Business Alliance. "We are excited to begin construction on this state-of-the art facility, which will support more than 1,000 stores and will bring hundreds of jobs to the area."

Dollar General's groundbreaking ceremony celebrated the start of construction on the new distribution center. Mayor Kenneth Gulley; Rep. Terri Sewell; Commissioner Jimmie Stephens, Jefferson County Commission; Director Seth Hammett, Alabama Development Office; and other state and local officials welcomed Dollar General to the community during the event.

The one million square-foot distribution center is expected to open in early 2012 and to serve more than 1,000 stores throughout Alabama and the Southeast.

In honor of the new distribution center, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, architect Leo A. Daly and general contractor Clayco Inc. donated a total of $10,000 to Abrams Elementary, Charles F. Hard Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, Jonesboro Elementary, Westhills Elementary, Concord Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, McAdory Elementary and the Bessemer Public Library.

The Bessemer facility joins Dollar General's network of nine distribution centers, which are located in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Virginia, Mississippi, Missouri, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina and Indiana.

Dollar General currently operates 511 stores in Alabama, including 32 in Jefferson County.
