Canadian apparel sector grappling with ageing workforce - Report

Another problem is the non-availability of adequate in-house training programmes in small and medium sized units. This may result in a decrease in domestic production levels, the study points out.

Other pressing issues that face the Canadian apparel industry, as mentioned by the study are, the need for employee and management specific functional training, the need for improved transitioning of post secondary graduates into the workforce, and the need for the AHRC to improve its representation and outreach with the various sub-sectors of the industry.

Most of the issues facing the industry are internal and hence within the sphere of influence of the AHRC. Hence, the report recommends that the AHRC should adopt a three-pronged approach to workout a solution to the problems facing the Canadian apparel industry. The three frameworks suggested are production and service workforce training framework, entrepreneurship training framework, and Council improvement framework.
