Ukrainian apparel import reduced 80% after Russian invasion

The import of apparel by Ukraine has registered a sharp decline after its invasion by Russian forces on February 24 this year. The geo-political upheaval has disrupted not only normal life, but also trading activities in the country. The value of Ukraine’s apparel import in March 2022 was mere 20 per cent of what the country had imported in October 2021.

In March 2022, Ukraine had imported apparel worth $17.292 million, compared to $91.452 million in October 2021, which is a decline of 81.31 per cent, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

Ukraine’s garment imports slipped to about one-fourth in March from the preceding month of February 2022, when the country had imported goods valued at $59.438 million. The value of imports was $72.603 million in January 2022, $75.034 million in December 2021 and $70.968 million in November 2021.

As per analysis based on the data from TexPro, Ukrainian garment imports showed upward trend till July-September 2021 quarter, when the country had imported garments worth $270.486 million. But the value decreased to $237.455 million in October-December 2021. The import further dried up and touched as low as $149.337 million in January-March 2022. The quarterly import is set to fall further to below $100 million during the current quarter.

Ukraine’s total apparel imports stood at $861.902 million in 2021. The major apparel items imported were trousers & shorts (22.32 per cent), jerseys 13.63 per cent, T-shirts 9.34 per cent, shirts 5.71 per cent, innerwear 5.62 per cent, coats 5.45 per cent and socks 4.94 per cent.

Ukraine had imported home textiles worth $397.697 million last year.
