Kontoor Brands has received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term environmental goals. The company aims to reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 46.2 per cent by 2030, using 2019 as the base year.

Additionally, it aims to cut absolute scope 3 emissions, which encompass purchased goods and services, fuel and energy-related activities, and transportation, by the same percentage within the same timeframe, Kontoor Brands said in a media release.

“We have committed to the Science Based Targets initiative to help create a more sustainable and just future, using our science-based targets as a guide, we will continue accelerating our efforts to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and environmental impacts. This is an important milestone in our efforts to combat climate change and further solidifies Kontoor’s commitment to contributing to a healthier planet and working towards a more equitable society. Simply put, it is the right thing to do,” said Jeff Frye, VP of sustainability, innovation, product development and procurement, Kontoor Brands.

The Science Based Targets initiative is a partnership between CDP Global, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the UN Global Compact (UNGC). It is focused on accelerating companies worldwide to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.
