Bangladesh readymade garments (RMG) manufacturers, global brands and retailers, global unions and their Bangladeshi affiliates have established the RMG Sustainability Council (RSC) to carry forward the work on workplace safety. RSC will continue with factory inspections, remediation monitoring, safety training and an independent safety and health complaints mechanism.
The functions of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh have been shifted to RSC, a permanent national organisation, the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said in a press release.Bangladesh readymade garments (RMG) manufacturers, global brands and retailers, global unions and their Bangladeshi affiliates have established the RMG Sustainability Council (RSC) to carry forward the work on workplace safety. RSC will initially conduct its workplace safety programmes at the more than 1,600 RMG factories covered under the Accord, but will eventually cover all RMG export units.
“The RSC is an unprecedented national initiative and through our collective efforts with the brands and trade unions we will make sure that Bangladesh remains one of the safest countries to source RMG products from,” BGMEA president Rubana Huq said.
