Amazon, the largest online retailer, has joined CanopyStyle initiative and unveiled its timelined commitment to ensure that by 2022 all of its private label clothing will not include “rayon or viscose derived from ancient and endangered forests, or from endangered species’ habitats or other controversial sources as defined by Canopy reports and tools”.

This announcement applies to all of the fabrics used by Amazon’s private fashion lines, more than 60 brands, with products ranging from shorts to dresses to t-shirts.

Amazon is a corporate giant with over 100 million members worldwide and $280.52 billion in net sales in 2019. In the United States alone, one in three Americans own an Amazon membership. With its extensive reach, Amazon has the potential to catalyse a major shift in the fashion and e-commerce industries as well as contribute significantly to global conservation efforts.

Teams at Amazon UK and Amazon US will be using the CanopyStyle Hot Button Report to inform their procurement decisions. Amazon will also be supporting the scale up of next generation solutions like the use of recycled clothing to make new viscose fabrics, rather than wood from the world’s ancient and endangered forests.

With the addition of Amazon’s private brands, the CanopyStyle initiative now brings together over 320 brands, retailers, and designers representing $578 billion in annual revenue. All are committed to eliminating ancient and endangered forest fibre from their fabrics, catalysing commercial production of next generation solutions, and advancing large-scale conservation of the world’s forests.

Amazon announced its CanopyStyle commitment as part of a suite of sustainability initiatives including packaging, leather and clothing. Canopy’s work with Amazon is currently focused on viscose fabrics.

Through its CanopyStyle and Pack4Good initiatives, Canopy is working with hundreds of companies to reach critical 2030 climate and biodiversity milestones by replacing 50 per cent of tree fibre currently used in the viscose and packaging supply chains with next generation alternatives.
