Esprit, the Hong Kong-based publicly owned clothing manufacturer, has been recently recognized as the ‘Leader’ in the Greenpeace Detox Catwalk, an interactive online platform that evaluates the progress made by leading international clothiers towards a toxic-free future.

The evaluation acknowledges the company’s efforts in cleaning toxic wastes, “Esprit has the potential to become at true detox leader. The company has shown it is committed to cleaning up its act and ensuring its supply chain is free of hazardous chemicals. The well-known casual wear company has started a critical process to come clean on its chemical discharge data."

Charles Dickinson, the senior vice president- head of Global Quality Management and Sustainability, Esprit, expressed his sentiments over the new recognition, “The efforts the whole team have all put in over the past twelve months, since we started this difficult journey, are paying off. This is an excellent start and considerable motivation to help us on the difficult journey of reaching the goal of eliminating hazardous chemicals from our supply chain by 2020.”

Founded in 1968, Esprit specializes in high-quality clothing for women, men and kids. The company’s apparels are sold in over 40 countries worldwide through a network of nearly 900 self-operated retail stores and some 8,100 wholesale points of sales including franchise partners, and sales space in department stores.

Esprit is also an active member of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) group, a coalition of major apparel and footwear brands and retailers dedicated towards the cause of leading the industry towards zero discharge of hazardous chemicals by 2020.

Supported by the independent global campaigning organization Greenpeace, the Detox Catwalk assesses how committed companies have performed against key criteria such as their efforts towards eliminating known hazardous chemicals from their products and processes, and what steps they are taking towards full supply chain transparency.

Founded in 1971 in Vancouver, Canada, Greenpeace focuses its campaigning on worldwide issues such as climate change, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, genetic engineering and anti-nuclear issues. The non-governmental environmental organization has offices in over forty countries. (PB)
