APTA declares shut down of textile units tomorrow
July 10, 2008 (Pakistan)

Price hike in gas and petroleum products have sent a wave of disappointment in the textile industry, which had also warned of shuting down production units if adequate measure were not taken by the Government.

Members of All Pakistan Textile Association (APTA) had recently held two meetings, in Lahore and Faisalabad, for discussing about steps to be taken against the unscrupulous decisions of the Government.

Leaders of the textile industry unanimously protested against this hike which came into effect on July 1, especially since the sector was already engaged in dealing with other pressures and crisis.

However, no amount of protest or allegation could move the Government and therefore APTA has announced a one-day closure tomorrow to give vent to their disappointment.

Adil Mehmood, Chairman of APTA stated on July 8 that increase in the prices of electricity, gas and petrol has worsened the situation. Hikes of 31 percent in gas rates and 16 percent in power rates have virtually paralyzed the industry.
