CAI upwardly revises 2013-14 cotton output to 39.5mn bales

The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has once again upwardly revised the country’s cotton production for the ongoing season 2013-14 to 39.5 million bales of 170 kg each, from its last month’s estimate of 38.82 million bales, Business Line reports quoting PTI.
 
As on June 30, 2014, about 38.23 million bales of cotton arrived in the market during the ongoing season that began on October 1, 2013, according to the CAI.
 
In the western state of Gujarat, the CAI estimated cotton crop this season at 12.5 million bales, compared to the previous season’s production of 8.65 million bales.
 
Likewise, in Maharashtra, the total cotton output is estimated to increase from 7.825 million bales in 2012-13 season to 8.5 million bales in the current season, the CAI data showed.
 
In 2013-14 season, the total cotton supply is estimated at 44.325 million bales, while consumption by domestic textile mills is pegged at 29.5 million bales, leaving a surplus of 15.825 million bales.
 
In 2012-13 cotton year, India produced 35.675 million bales of cotton, according to the CAI.
