Nigerian govt signs MoU with Germany, Pakistan on cotton

The Government of Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cotton development with Germany and Pakistan. With the objective to explore the various investment opportunities in the cotton sector, the Memorandum mainly covers areas related to cotton farming, production, processing, and its value chain development.
As per the MoU, on behalf of the Nigerian Government, Arewa Cotton, involved in ginning and selling cotton lint to Nigerian textile mills, would supervise and coordinate with Germany and Pakistan on developing a practical method of development of cotton and its entire value chain, BUSINESSDAY reported.
Speaking at a workshop on ‘Cotton Production and Cotton Value Chain Development in the Southwest’, organized for cotton farmers in the Southwest, ahead of the cotton farming season 2014, Adebayo Olayemi, Southwest manager, Arewa Cotton, said the Government of Nigeria has entered into a partnership with international communities to fully explore the prospectives related to cotton farming and industry.
After finding out that a large sum of foreign exchange is spent every year in the imports of textiles and cotton materials in Nigeria, the Government of Nigeria has taken steps by entering into collaboration with international communities –Germany and Pakistan – and has appointed Arewa Cotton to act as liaison between farmers and the Government, Olayemi informed.
He added that, with the inadequate cotton production in the country and the losses recorded because of the contamination by foreign matter which reduces the financial value of Nigerian cotton, the involvement of the Government of Nigeria with cotton under its Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) controlled by Arewa Cotton, would yield useful results. The ATA revolves around the empowerment of farmers for improved farming capacity.
Minister of agriculture and rural development, Akinwumni Adesina said the Government of Nigeria has increased its involvement through the Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES), exclusively for cotton farmers, to help achieve the goals of the ATA. The GES is one of the vital components of the Government of Nigeria’s ATA. It was designed with the purpose of providing affordable agricultural inputs like fertilizers and hybrid seeds to farmers, to help them raise their yields to match global standards. The GES is a novel scheme, which tries to do away with the difficulties usually associated with the distribution of fertilizers and hybrid seeds in the country.
