DHL builds logistics facility for UK retailer Primark

DHL Supply Chain, the leading contract logistics specialist, is building a logistics center in Mönchengladbach for its customer Primark, bringing 250 new jobs to the region. The new facility with a ground area of 40,000 m2 will be located in the "Regiopark" near motorways A61 and A46.

The site will include a four-section warehouse as well as a two-storey structure for functional rooms and offices; it will also employ energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly technologies. The fashion retailer Primark has chosen DHL as its logistics partner to help expand its business across Northern Europe. Mönchengladbach was chosen as the strategically favorable location for handling shipments to retail stores in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

The new distribution center will handle shipments for Primark stores located in the neighboring countries. The facility will be purpose built to warehouse and dispatch fashion garments in cartons and will also feature a hanging garment racking and rail transport system. DHL will provide a customized logistics solution for Primark including all warehouse based activities together with transport from the logistics center to the growing number of Primark stores. The facility will start operating in mid-2012.

"We are also pleased to be bringing new jobs to the region."

Martin White, Primark's Supply Chain Director, added: "Primark will be focusing on expansion over the coming years. We chose DHL as our logistics partner for a number of reasons - its comprehensive presence in Europe, the successful delivery of similar projects and its openness to our needs and requirements. We look forward to growing our business together with DHL."

Primark was founded in 1969 in Dublin, Ireland, where it was known as Penneys. The company opened its first retail store in Continental Europe in the Netherlands in December 2008. Primark entered the German retail market a year later in 2009. Today, the Irish fashion retailer has 225 stores throughout Western Europe.
