Indian leather industry may soon get a chance to benefit from Italian technology and know-how, as the Council for Leather Exorts (CLE) in India is actively trying to establish a design studio in collaboration with Italy.

CLE Regional Director (North) Sanjay Kumar informed that they have already convened a meeting with Joint Secretary of the Commerce Ministry of India, following which, a delegation would soon visit Italy to meet the Italian Government officials to take the initiative further.

The delegation would comprise of representatives of CLE and its other two project partners – the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) and the National Institute of Design (NID).

The design studio is intended to be set up at one of the NID centres in India, Mr. Kumar said, and added that modalities of the project would be worked out in the coming days.

At present, India each year exports leather items worth US$ 4.6 billion.

‘Expo Riva Schuh India', an exhibition of footwear and leather accessories to be held by the Italian Trade Commission in New Delhi from July 5-7, 2012, is also expected to benefit India’s domestic leather industry.
