Ethiopia hosted the first workshop aimed at enhancing cooperation between India and Ethiopia to help the later improve the quality, product and design of its leather items.

Housing largest livestock resource in Africa, Ethiopia has an ability to serve as a reliable source of raw inputs for the leather industry, Minister for Industry Tadesse Haile said.

However, presently the country is not being able to take full advantage of the industry’s potential in terms of exports and employment generation, as the sector is confronted with several challenges such as technical incompetence, lack of knowhow and restricted market access, the Minister said.

Hence, there is a need to put in great deal of efforts and collaboration with technologically advanced partners to make a mark in the world market, he added.

Technological collaboration with the Indian Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) would facilitate upgradation of processing techniques in the leather industry, while paving way for optimum utilization of raw inputs available in the country for preparation of finished leather items catering to the local as well as world markets, Wondu Legesse, Director General of the Leather Industry Development Institute, said.
