Coldest Arctic blast prompts retailers for winter clearance

3 min read

This outbreak produced locally heavy snows in the Great Lakes, but the remainder of the week was generally dry in the entire eastern two-thirds of North America due to strong high pressure.

The Pacific Northwest and western Canada experienced frequent rains and mountain snows. However, late week, a huge Pacific storm took shape and entered the West Coast producing heavy coastal rains all the way to Southern California.

Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America:
The Arctic blast aided retailers looking to move winter clearance from the shelves and also drove cold weather items such as space heaters, hot foods and beverages.

Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America:
While seasonal demand patterns were likely within historical ranges, the late week winter storm likely curtailed retail traffic levels. Emergency purchasing in advance of the storm was robust.
