Karnaphuli is a river which is the life line for the people of Chittagong in Bangladesh. Since long there had been complaints of heavy pollution and danger to the aquatic life from the industries situated along the river.
There are over 700 industrial units which were throwing pollutants into the river without treating the same. The Department of Environment (DoE) had served notices to those industrial units to treat the pollutants before the effluents were released from the industrial units. Only a few units had responded to the notice which had a deadline of October 31, 2007.
The DoE met yesterday again after a lapse of more than two months of given dead line to take strict action against those units which have not complied with the directives of the department.
All the the representatives from the elected local body, the Chittagong development authority and the port authorities were present in the meeting.
The major industries which have been identified and said to be contributing to the pollution to the river are the textile mills, tanneries, chemical units etc. Adding to the pollution from the these units are the wastes being generated from the population of the city of Chittagong.
