The 23rd India International Leather Fair (IILF) 2008 was inaugurated by Dr Krishnamurthy, Chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, on January 31. The fair will come to an end tomorrow. It is going on at Chennai's plush business complex, Chennai Trade Center.

IILF has emerged as an ideal setting to explore new opportunities and avenues, for both national and international leather industries. Showing his concern during the inaugural function, Mr Krishnamurthy commented that their objective is to improve the competitiveness of the leather industry and place it on top.

In the last three years the council's main aim has been to improve the general status of the industry. IILF 2008 is set to cross all previous parameters in terms of participation and business.

By conducting fairs, the sector has drawn attention to its full potential. The industry according to the experts can grow bigger and achieve much more than the targeted export turnover of nearly US $7 billion by 2010.

Mukhtarul Amin, Chairman, Council for Leather Exports (CLE), also said that prospects for Indian leather exports have further brightened, as China is experiencing stagnation largely owing to a sudden rise in labour cost and electricity problems. This situation has helped India to become a strong and dependable supplier of leather goods to world market.
