Higher employment rate in February

In February 4 535 000 (±35 000) persons in the age group 15-74 years were employed, an increase by 95 000 persons or 2.1 percent compared with February 2007. The number of employed persons increased for both men and women. Among young people 15-24 years old the number of employed increased by 41 000 persons or 9.5 percent.

Employment increased in the business services industry, in the construction industry and in the engineering industry. Among the employed, 4 117 000 (± 39 000) persons were at work, which is an increase by 125 000 persons or 3.1 percent compared to the same month a year ago. Persons at work means employed persons that have worked at least one hour during the reference week.

The number of hours worked increased by 2.3 percent to on average 150.2 (±1.6) million hours per week.

In February 293 000 (±21 000) persons in the age group 15-74 were unemployed, which corresponds to 6.1 (±0.4) percent of the labour force. The unemployment rate for men was 5.7 (±0.6) percent and for women 6.5 (±0.7) percent. Among young people 15-24 years old the unemployment rate was 19.0 (±2.6) percent.
