Botswana Ministry of Agriculture has expressed the desire to provide training to local tanners for improving the quality and quantity of hides and skins for local processing.
Although there are factories that processes wet blue hides into finished leather, there are none to process raw hides and skins to the wet blue stage except for Botswana Meat Commission tannery which is also under temporary closure.
The ministry aims to encourage investors to fund the development of processing units so as to provide a market for raw hides and skins and sustain the leather finishing industry.
In order to motivate tanners to improve local processing, the ministry will reconsider export levies on hides and skins which are presently very low. While tax on calf-skin varies from one thebe to 80 thebe per kilogram, those on dry hides ranges from one thebe to P1.50 per kilogram.
This measure will be taken in light of the fact that countries like Namibia and others in South African Development Community have increased their export levy on raw hides and skins from 30 to 60 percent respectively.
