Fujian Province eyes newer markets for its footwear exports

In the first quarter of this year, Putian City of Fujian Province exported some 17,000 shipments of shoes with a total of 98.68 million pair of footwear.
An increase of 6 percent was registered in the number of shipments, while there was a surge of 11.6 percent in quantity of shoes exported compared to the same period last year.
US accounted for one of the largest market for Chinese footwear products; however, because of the present recession in the US market, a decline in exports from the region was discerned in the first quarter of 2008.
Presently, local shoes manufacturers are targeting EU as their major export market. Infact, Chinese entrepreneurs participated in footwear exposition held in Germany, to grab orders from European clients.
A total of 2,423 shipments of shoes had been dispatched for EU with 14.21 million pairs in the first three months of 2008 marking an increase of 35.4 and 50.3 percent respectively.
Moreover, in order to reduce the dependence on American market, footwear enterprises in China have started seeking markets in countries like Russia and South Africa.
