The Chemical Industries Association 17 June 2008 welcomed the European Parliament's vote on the Waste Framework Directive.

The outcome of vote means we have great clarity on what the chemical industry must class as a waste or a by-product from a manufacturing process. This will enable industry to use by-products to make other useful substances rather than having to dispose of it as waste in landfill.

Commenting on today's Dr Anne-Gaëlle Collot, CIA's Environmental Protection Policy Advisor said this vote is "makes sense for the environment, being able to use our by -products means the chemical industry can use fewer virgin resources and contribute less to landfill".

Dr Collot added "We are looking forward to working with UK Government to implement this new way forward".

The new text of the Waste Framework Directive also introduces workable definitions of recovery, disposal and extended producer responsibility and a flexible waste hierarchy based on life cycle thinking.
