Even though statistics suggest that China is the top exporter of leather goods in the world, India is not lagging far behind. In the present scenario, rising input cost has curbed the growth of Chinese leather industry, which is struggling hard to keep manufacturing cost under control.
Where as, on the other hand, India is gaining in exports, which is quite evident from the fact, that now the buyers across the planet are eyeing India, for their consumption of leather products.
Indian leather goods, due to their high quality have carved a niche in the global market. Over the period of time, the country has emerged as the second largest exporter of leather goods. Experts opine that in order to reach that goal, the leather industry must focus on key deliverables of innovative design, consistently superior quality and unfailing delivery schedules. The positive factor to this is that, the availability of abundant raw material base, large domestic market and the opportunity to cater to world markets makes India an attractive destination for technology and investments.
Increase in exports and capacity is also expected to create more jobs. Presently, about 2.5 million workers are involved in the leather industry, in both organized and unorganized sectors.
