Illicit transfer of power through wire tapping or manipulation of electricity meters has become a menace for Srilanka and it is with regard to resolving this growing problem that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the Ministry of Power and Energy are initiating discussions to curb the same.

The problem of power piracy has spread throughout the island unabated causing enormous loss to the CEB. In fact, the Government agency responsible for supplying power to the various industrial sectors has been losing as much as Rs10 million every month due to theft of electricity.

An investigation done on the matter has revealed that all small and big businessmen and domestic electricity consumers stand at par in terms of involvement in high tension wire tapping and tampering of meters. As such, tracing the perpetrators would not be an easy job.

Surprisingly, large scale textile factories and other types of industries in the North and Eastern part of the country have been found guilty of consuming electricity distributed by the CEB through wire-tapping and other means.

As of now, the Ministry of Power and Energy has asked the CEB to strengthen its investigation body so as to arrest the culprits.
