In a meeting with European entrepreneurs in Ha Noi on August 28, Mr Hoang Trung Hai Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam proposed that the European Union withdraw the anti-dumping tax on the leather capped shoes exported to the region.

The Deputy PM harped on the fact that the two year long imposition of anti-dumping tax had severely affected a large number of businesses, including those from Europe. Moreover about one million local workers had also been badly impacted by stagnancy in exports.

Mr Hoang further called on the EU to acknowledge Vietnam as a market economy and urged European entrepreneurs to lend their support to the proposal which will help boost economic ties between the two nations.

At the event held by the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, the Deputy PM pointed out that over 20 years of renewal and international economic integration, the socio-economic achievements of the country have always recieved support from European businesses.

He further added saying that Europe has emerged to become the most important economic partner as bilateral trade has been growing at 15-20 percent annually and touched US $14 billion last year.

So far, European investment in nearly 730 projects in Vietnam amounts to over $9 billion and if trade barriers are removed to encourage exporters, bilateral trade is sure to reach greater heights.
