On January 12th to 15th São Paulo will host COUROMODA 2009 – International Shoes, Sportsgoods and Leathergoods Fair, that will present the new fashion collections of 1,200 companies producing footwear, sneakers, bags, travelling luggage, sportsgoods, garments and fashion accessories.

COUROMODA is the leading footwear fair in Latin America and one of the four largest in the world. This 36th edition will be spread over an 80 thousand square meter area at the Anhembi Exhibition Center, in São Paulo – Brazil, which means 9% bigger than at last edition.

COUROMODA is the first event of the Brazilian trade fairs calendar and it opens the season for footwear, accessories and garment industry sales. Over 77 thousand retailers, distributors, entrepreneurs and buyers are being expected at the fair.

The exhibitors at COUROMODA are responsible for 90% of the Brazilian footwear production, exceeding 750 million pairs/year. These companies will show their new collections of some 3,000 brands of footwear and accessories, expecting to generate sales corresponding to 25% of the industry yearly turnover.

Women's shoes are the big highlight (representing 30% of the exhibiting companies), but the fair also shows bags and leathergoods (17%), men's shoes (14%), children's shoes (7%), costume jewelries, garments and accessories. An important innovation at COUROMODA 2009 is the expansion of the sports sector, which already represents 16% of the fair.

Some 11,000 square meters will be occupied by manufacturers of sneakers, sports attires and gears, special equipment and accessories for several modalities of sports.

COUROMODA is already an international reference for the footwear market and, in addition to the retailers from all over Brazil, it should host buyers from approximately 70 countries. "This will be the first worldwide footwear fair to be held after the economic crisis that started in September, hence, there is a great expectative among manufacturers and retailers", underlines J. Francisco Dos Santos, founder and president of COUROMODA.

Dos Santos says that the fair will show that the Brazilian footwear industry is healthy, renew and continues to be highly competitive. "The footwear retail market is closing 2008 with a 5% average increase and no stocks. They will need to renovate their display-windows and most certainly the fair will have plenty to offer".

Dos Santos underlines that the domestic industry will continue being the major supplier of the footwear shops in Brazil, a market encompassing around 40,000 sales points with more than R$ 30 billion (US$ 13 billion) turnover/year. "Prospects are also very wide-ranging, with an adjustment of the dollar exchange rate” – ends up Dos Santos.

“The turnover of the footwear world market is estimated in US$ 200 billion a year and Brazil, already exporting to 120 countries around the world, is firmly confirming that it is the best production choice outside Southeast Asia".
