A delegation from Bangladesh Finished Leather and Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association (BFLLFEA) and Bangladesh Tanners Association gathered at the office of Mr Dilip Barua, the Industry Minister, on January 19 to make a demand for setting up a central treatment plant (CTP) at the proposed tannery plants in Savar.
In this regard, earlier, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Government that agreed to shift the Hazaribag tanneries and build the Dhaka Leather Industry City at Savar.
This city would be developed on 200 acres of land at Tetuljhara in Savar, with 195 industrial units, which will create direct and indirect employment for many people.
According to Rezaul Karim Ansari, Chairman of BFLLFEA, leather sector, the export base industry will face serious threat if Bangladesh fails to create environment friendly products. Presently, buyers have become conscious about the environment and pay attention how the products are manufactured.
Mr Barua assured the industry people that Government would take necessary measures for the betterment of the industry and plans to invest Tk1.76 billion for the project. This sewage treatment plant, would effectively manage waste in the proposed Leather Industry City.
