US-ASEAN Business Council names Mr Feldman as new President

The US-ASEAN Business Council named Alexander Feldman as President, replacing Matthew Daley, who held the position for more than four years.

Feldman, a former U.S. State Department and Commerce Department official, will be responsible for the Council's operations in the United States and its five offices in Southeast Asia. The trade association is composed of nearly 100 U.S.-based companies, including two-thirds of the Dow Industrial Average component companies, and supports American trade, investment and business interests in Southeast Asia.

"Alex has tremendous public sector experience promoting American commercial and diplomatic interests in Asia as well as an impressive record of launching and growing businesses there,'" said Muhtar Kent, Chairman of the US-ASEAN Business Council and Chairman & CEO of The Coca Cola Company. "As we celebrate the Business Council's 25th anniversary, we could not have picked a more qualified individual to help the Business Council grow and chart the course for the next twenty-five years."

ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations)is an economic and political alliance of ten Southeast Asian countries – Brunei, Burma(Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – and has a combined population of more than 500 million people.

Southeast Asia is America's fifth-largest trading partner behind only Canada, Mexico, China and the EU. American exports to the region have grown steadily over the past ten years and are roughly the same as U.S. exports to China and three-times larger than American exports to India ($68.4 billion to ASEAN nations in 2008 versus $71.4 billion to China and $18.7 billion to India).

"We have a tremendous opportunity this year – as Singapore hosts the APEC Summit – to further grow the important trade and business relationship between the United States and Southeast Asia,'" said Feldman. “I am excited to build on the strong foundation that my predecessors at the Council have built and help our members expand their business interests in the region.'"

Feldman's twenty-year career has focused on ASEAN and includes more than a decade of residence in Asia,where he has conducted business in all ten ASEAN member countries. From 2004-2008, Feldman served in the U.S. Departments of State and Commerce. Under the leadership of Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, he led the Bureau of International Information Programs, held the rank of Assistant Secretary of State with responsibility for global public diplomacy and introduced business metrics and interactive media strategies to improve the United State's image overseas. As the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Feldman launched an innovative program combining traditional media buys and digital media to promote opportunities for study in American universities to Asian students.

Prior to returning to Washington in 2004, Feldman served as an international media executive in Hong Kong and Singapore, working in radio, television & the Internet for NBC Universal, News Corporation and Viacom. He also founded Singapore-based webcasting company B2Bcast.com, which broadcast top government officials from most ASEAN nations as well as leading American and Asian business executives. Feldman started his career as Special Assistant to the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for International Economic Policy in Washington, DC.
