Leather which is irrevocably linked with Kanpur, the sleepy toddlers' town reigned high as the locals discovered an enterprising streak with the stationing of British troops in the cantonment in 1886.

Amidst this cantonment, entrepreneurs found the opportunity to trade and enterprise as the troops required leather saddlery, which resulted into a flourishing cottage tanning buffalo hide industry.

In the first half of the previous century the, tanning of leather was a time consuming process, taking up as much three months, but with the advent of technology it has been reduced to a matter of days.
