A worker's union from the chemical and leather sector has petitioned the labour ministry to look in to alleged unfair labour practices adopted by the Lee Group of Companies in the country and has been forwarded to the Minister, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode.
In the petition signed by the union's General Secretary, Comrade Matthew Momoh, the union reminded the Ministry of an earlier letter of complaint sent to him against the Lee Group on de-unionisation of members, for which the Minister summoned both parties to a meeting in his office on 23rd June, 2009.
The union lamented that since the meeting, the management of the group had become more hostile to labour issues and derided deliberate and calculated efforts that had been made by the management to stifle trade union activities in all Lee Group companies.
The letter also emphasized the fact that the activities of Lee Group, were a complete violation of Article 87 of 1LO to which Mr. Lee's country of origin is a signatory and it also contravenes fundamental rights of Nigerian workers to freedom of association.
