According to experts, East African countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and in a wider sense also Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Sudan are losing out heavily in much needed foreign exchange by exporting raw skin hides and not value-added leather products.
Delving out statistics, they say that the region is losing potential value addition for 4.5 million cattle and 14.5 million goats and sheep annually. If most of this is processed in the East African countries, it can generate 60,000 thousand jobs and also help in economic development of the region.
According to projections made by experts, these countries can generate up to US $1.2 billion yearly from leather and its finished products through value-addition of hides and skins. However, the sub-sector has suffered neglect and apathy of their respective governments.
