On 30th June 2010, a round table on Fair Trade & Sustainable Consumption is being organised at India International Centre, Max Mauler Marg, New Delhi to launch ProSustain, a project aimed at promoting Fair Trade & Sustainable Consumption in India. HIVOS, Fair Trade Forum – India, IRFT (International Resources for Fairer Trade) & Shop for Change are the partners in the project. The Project is funded by the European Union.

Dr. Christi Fernadez, IAS, Secretary to the President of India will be participating as the Chief Guest and more than 70 participants including CSR Heads from Corporate Sector, Representatives of Development Organisations, Consumer Groups, Environmental Groups and leading NGOs are taking part in the program.

A commonly-branded network of 'Fair Trade' shops, initially 20 shops, will be developed under the project for selling Fair Trade products. 'Fair Trade promotion among young consumers,' 'developing Fair Trade-corporate partnerships' and 'intervening at policy level to extend diginified and sustainable livelihood for the grassroots producers in India,' are the other important activities planned under the project.

The specific objective of the project ProSustain is to “create a consumer market for Fair Trade products in India that measurably contributes to the improvement of rural livelihoods and provides farmers and artisans with the resources necessary to follow environmentally sustainable production practices”. This will help to create more markets for the products made by grassroots artisans and farmers which would ultimately contribute to poverty alleviation in India.

The project will be benefiting an estimated 100,000 people who are working directly and indirectly with Indian Fair Trade organisations.

Project Partners
The Pro-Sustain project, is a project supported by the European Commission and is led by Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries (HIVOS), jointly implemented by Fair Trade Forum India (FTF-I), International Resources for Fairer Trade (IRFT), and the associate partner Shop For Change.
