In the first half of this fiscal, leather exports from Brazil accounted to US $879.6 million, 78 percent up, over the exports of last year's corresponding period, as per the data revealed by the Confederation of Brazilian Hides and Skins Industries (CICB).

In the month of June, the country garnered $165.7 million through leather exports, which was 73 percent over the export revenue of June, 2009.

Considering such a growth in exports during the initial six months, chairman of CICB, Wolfgang Goerlich stated that, these are signs of recovery in leather exports and the overall exports at the end of the year are likely to reach $1.7 billion, he estimated.

The leather industry of Brazil, during January to April, targeted countries such as, Italy with $211.36 million, China with $196.42 million, Hong Kong with $100.27 million and the United States with $85 million.

During this period, exports to Tunisia, Lithuania and Norway recorded a strong growth of 76 percent with $1.98 million worth of exports, 91 percent with $1.66 million exports and 100 percent with $12.3 million worth of exports, respectively.

With a view to make an improvement in leather sales, an agreement has been renewed by CICB and the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex body), last week.
