The massive floods which occurred recently in Pakistan, has hit the country's flourishing leather garment industry hard. A 30 percent export plunge, amounting to one billion dollars has been anticipated by the Pakistan leather garments manufacturers and exporters association, due to these floods.

The country has lost huge livestock owing to the floods, due to which the leather garment exporters and manufacturers of the country are finding difficulties in getting hides from their regular sources, informed the Chairman of the association.

They have witnessed 15 to 20 percent fall in hides supply from their regular sources, though no accurate figure has been estimated, yet, regarding killed livestock. In addition to this, owing to the natural calamity, raw hide prices are also expected to shoot up.

The government needs to take measures urgently and allow raw material import from foreign countries in a bid to salvage the industry. Moreover, it also requires to take steps to curtail livestock smuggling from Pakistan to adjacent countries as well as to the Middle East, averred a expert.
