The Pakistan Government's decision of observing gas holiday for two-days in a week has raised the anxiety of leather industry, as the decision is sure to lay a negative impact on the sector, which is one of the important export oriented industry.

The leather sector has sounded a caution that if the government keeps on assuming such detrimental policies, it may lead the nation to economic slump. It is also averred that, the move will prove harmful for the tanning industry as continuous power supply is essential to care for the expensive raw materials including hides and skins. The two day gas holiday would cause the industry to suffer a gas scarcity of over 33 percent.

In winters, it is not only seasonal breaks but even closure for maintenance reasons that hamper working of the leather industry which is a continuous process industry. Experts divulged that as the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha is nearing, and tanners make bulk purchases of hides and skins during this period, this material needs to be preserved for days together, but such gas holiday would cause hindrance.

Further, the leather sector experts even stated that, power cuts and energy load shedding in whole of Pakistan and especially in Punjab is badly harming the leather industry. Right now even the leather sector has slumped by over 30 percent and it would plummet further if such anti-business policies are not restrained.
