Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has advised the government to set up a Leather Ministry. PTA Central Chairman Khurshid Alam in a letter sent to the Prime Minister recommended that the Leather Ministry be set up along the lines of Textile Ministry.
He while pressing his case for establishing a Leather Ministry, averred that leather sector being the second largest and a substantially value added sector for Pakistan, is facing a number issues. The leather finishing and made ups industries are amongst major industries in Pakistan, and contribute over $500 million to Pakistan's economy each year.
If the country means to retain its share in global leather market, it needs to modernise its leather sector. This would require the country to switch from exports of finished leather to value-added items like gloves, garments, etc.
