Pak receives meager share of total US leather imports
Nov '10
According to the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), the country has received an insignificant share of $173 million which is just 0.64 percent of the entire US leather imports.

Chairman of the PTA, Khurshid Alam, stated that the business volume of leather products between Pakistan and United States is inconsequential. US has been importing leather products amounting to $27.189 billion which is 20 percent of the total leather import of the world

According to the Chairman, 800 tanneries had been operating in Pakistan and this sector contributes around 5 percent to the Gross Domestic Product and 5.4 percent to the export earnings of the country. 500,000 workers are engaged in this sector.

He stressed that the US Embassy must reflect on the matter of providing visa to the businessmen/industrialists competently, particularly to those recommended by the PTA. PTA members are genuine exporters and it permits membership to authentic entrepreneurs and exporters after properly examining their documents.

He further added about the requirement of a Free Trade Agreement with United States. He stated that entry to the US market is the most fundamental issue for the leather industry in Pakistan. He requested the US government to provide technological assistance for research and development particularly for livestock farming.

He also stated that there is latent opportunities for US businessmen in Pakistan. There are stringent
travel guidelines issued by US Foreign Mission/Embassy for its citizens who visit Pakistan and visa constraints for businessmen and visitors from Pakistan, who visit US.
