Zambia's leather exports have grown approximately three-fold from US$ 3.4 million in 2003 to US$ 10.8 million in 2009, according to Albert Mulonga, Zambia's Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Development.

Visualizing the huge potential for growth in this sector, the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Livestock along with other stakeholders have prepared an action plan to further boost the export of leather.

Zambia is part of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and linkages among SMEs in the region are also being worked out.

Countries like India are increasingly showing interest in leather from Zambia and COMESA countries due to the quality of the Zambian leather as well as the demand back home.
