Leather city to come up in Khartoum

Dr. Awad Ahmed al-Jaz, Sudan's Minister of Industry has announced that his Ministry, in association with Khartoum State, will be setting up a city for leather industries on an area of 500,000 feddan (1 feddan = 4200 sq. m).

During his inspection visit to the Leather Technology Centre, the Minister highlighted the significance and need for all the segments of the leather industry to attain sustainability. He also stressed on the need to boost production of shoes and students bags of various sizes, as per the international standards.

The Minister further stated that science and work should be intermingled to tap the potential of the Universities in creation of such products that not only satisfy consumer's preferences but also compliment the country's weather, while taking advantage of the country's expertise in the field.

The Minister mentioned the various steps that have been initiated for upgrading the leather industry, exercising a check on waste creation, and for development of the tanneries. He stated that the fair for leather industries, scheduled to begin very soon, aims at acquainting the participants with the real potential of the leather industry.

Dr. Awad al- seed AL Sheikh, Director of the Leather Technology Centre assured that his institute would make its best models available for the workshops and factories to support development of the industry on a scientific basis to ensure reasonable returns to the producers.
