The number of online shoppers in Nigeria is expected to hit 122.5 million by 2025 from 76.7 million in 2021, according to the country’s e-commerce market outlook released by the ministry of industry, trade and investment. Figures from the Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) show Nigeria’s e-payment transactions rose by 85.5 per cent year on year to N171.99 trillion in August 2021.

Minister handling the portfolio Otunba Niyi Adebayo revealed this at a recent stakeholder dialogue on e-commerce and digital trade policy for Nigeria in Abuja though his representative Suleman Audu, director, commodities and export department in the ministry.

The minister said the ministry is passionate about the growing investment opportunities in the e-commerce value chain. The sector grew from 14 per cent in 2019 to 17 per cent in 2020.

The current annual e-commerce spending in the country is estimated at about $13 billion, and is projected to rise to about $75 billion per annum by 2025, he was quoted as saying by Nigerian media reports.
