PCB raids 3 tanneries for pollution-check in UP

Following the directions of High Court, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) authorities along with engineers from Lucknow, recently raided three reputed tanneries of Jajmau and gathered water samples from all of them. The team even picked five other tanneries in Jajmau and carried out surprise checks.
High Court during a trial on July 13 directed PCB to raid three particular tanneries of Jajmau and produce a status report as regards their sewage discharge and treatment plants, before the court, in the next scheduled trial on August 13.
The UPPCB, following orders of the High Court performed raids in three specific tanneries, namely Upper India, Crown Tanning and Imperial Leather and exercised a check on the size of the treatment plants, their operating capacity and methods of discharging the effluents.
Of the three tanneries that were raided, two were non-functional, while for the primary effluent treatment plant (PETP) at the third tannery, Upper India Tannery, it was found that it was not capacitated enough for tanning of raw leather.
Raw leather tanning is the main process when highest amount of effluents are released. More over, the tannery was already forewarned for having a lowly sufficient raw tanning treatment plant.
Water samples were even drawn from Imperial Leather, one of the other two tanneries that was found closed. These samples will be examined by the UPPCB laboratory to assess the quality of water.
The 3 tanneries, were facing fury of both the regional authorities as also the UPPCB, as they failed to follow the pollution control standards.
